Toronto/Canada Kiss Maps
About the project
The Toronto Kiss Map, which I was hired to create for Chris Kay Fraser of Firefly Creative Writing, is a fun interactive web app where people place kiss stories on a map of Toronto. This was a project I was involved in from almost every angle, from the branding, to the website design, to the front-end development, to the back-end programming. It was definitely a challenge, but very worthwhile! I was originally going to set up a simple MySQL database to store all the kiss stories, but then I realized that it would be way easier to moderate the submissions if they were submitted through WordPress instead. So, I routed all of the map submissions through WordPress and set them up to save as comments (with custom metadata for the pin’s location) for ease of moderation and spam filtering, wrote a little code that assembled them all into an XML file for the Google Maps API to understand, and everything turned out great!
Following the success of the Toronto Kiss Map, we created a second site, the Canada Kiss Map, so the rest of Canada could join in the fun.
